ইংরেজিতে অনেক Noun রয়েছে যেগুলো Singular এবং Plural Form একই রকম হয়।এদের বলা হয় ‘Unmarked Nouns’। কখনো কখনো এদের ‘Zero Plurals’ও বলা হয়। আর এধরনের Noun গুলো BCS, Bank Job, NTRCA, ও Admission Test সহ সবধরনের Competitive Exam এর জন্য গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। বাজারে সুলভ বইগুলোতে এই Noun গুলো সম্পর্কে বিস্তারিত আলোচনা খুব কমই পাওয়া যায় । Google থেকে সাহায্য নিয়ে ‘Unmarked Noun’ এর একটি আলোচনা নিচে তুলে ধরলাম। প্রিয় পাঠক, প্রথমে আমি BSC সহ বিভিন্ন Competitive Exam এ আসা কিছু Question নিয়ে আলোচনা করব। There are some nouns which are identical in singular and plural. These are best called ‘unmarked plurals’, although the phrase ‘zero plurals’ has also been used. I have to spend long time to find out ‘unmarked nouns’ as they are not available in published books. - Fish: সমষ্টিগতভাবে একই ধরনের অনেক মাছ বুঝাতে মাছের নাম Singular ও Plural Form একই রকম হয়। যেমন: fish, pike, salmon, trout, cod, carp, halibut, flounder, herring, bass, perch, tench, bream, haddock. তবে বিভিন্ন প্রজাতির মাছ বুঝাতে S যোগ করতে হয়।
- Birds : পাখি যখন game birds হিসেবে চিন্ত করা হয় ,তখন Singular /Plural একই রূপ হয়। যেমন duck, pheasant, partridge, pigeon, ptarmigan, capercaillie. কিন্তু যখন game birds হিসেবে বিবেচনা করা হয না, তখন regular plural হয়.
- অন্যান্য প্রাণি: deer, sheep, swine, boar, mink, fowl, grouse, quail, shrimp, squid, bison, buffalo, moose, elk, antelope. কিন্তু যখন বিভিন্ন প্রজাতির প্রাণী বুঝালে Regular Plural হবে।.
- Some tribe names: Inuit, Sioux, Maori, Bedouin, Roma, Navajo
- যেসকল যান -craft দিয়ে শেষ হয়েছে: aircraft, hovercraft, spacecraft, seacraft,এবং শুধু craft. Not other “-craft” words e.g. spycraft, witchcraft, এগুলো সবসময় Singular.
- যে সকল ল্যাটিন শব্দ -ies দিয়ে শেষ হয়েছে: series, species, congeries
- কিছু স্থান: crossroads, headquarters
- কিছু পরিমাপের একক: pair , dozen, gross, score, stone, hundred, thousand. এদের পূর্বে সংখ্যাবাচক শব্দ থাকলে -s /es হয় না। কোন সংখ্যাবাচক শব্দ না থাকলে s/es যোগ হয় এবং এদের পর of হয়।
- Other: offspring, means, dice, cannon, forceps
Corps শব্দটি নিয়ে মজার একটি নিয়ম আছে। এটি Singular ও Plural এ একই বানান হয়। কিন্তু, Plural এর উচ্চারণ ভিন্ন। Singular উচ্চারণ: /kɔː $ kɔːr/।কিন্তু Plural উচ্চারণ: /kɔːz $ kɔːrz/
