Prepostion হলো Parts of Speech এর অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ একটি অংশ। এমন কোন পরীক্ষা নাই যেখানে Preposition থেকে Question আসে না। তাই Preposition খুব মনযোগসহ পড়তে হবে। সুতরাং Preposition এর Basic টা অবশ্যই জানতে হবে। এই Content টি সাজিয়েছি Prepostion এর Basic নিয়ে।
Preposition:
যে Word বা শব্দ Noun বা Pronoun এর পূর্বে বসে Sentence এর অন্যান্য Word এর সঙ্গে সর্ম্পক স্থাপন করে, তাকে Prepostion বলে। অর্থ্যাৎ Prepostion ব্যাক্যে ব্যবহৃত হয় Sentence এর অন্য শব্দের সাথে Noun বা Pornoun এর সর্ম্পক তৈরি করার জন্য।
যেমন:
At, about, with, without, of, for, in, into, after, before, by, on, away, from, besides, across, up, down, above, over etc.
The book is on the table.
I went to market.
Look at the whiteboard.
উপরের Sentence গুলোতে on, to, at হলো prepostion.
Classification of Preposition : Preposition ছয় প্রকার। যথা:
1.Simple Preposition: একটি Word দ্বারা গঠিত Preposition কে Simple Preposition বলে। যেমন: In, by, on, at, by, with, from, against etc.
2. Double Preposition: দুটি Simple Preposition এর সমন্বয়ে গঠিত Preposition যদি একটি Preposition এরমত কাজ করে, তবে তাকে Double Prepositon বলে। যেমন: Into (in+to); Within (with+in); Without (with+out) etc.
3. Compound Preposition: Noun, Adjective বা Adverb এর পূর্বে Prefix এর মত Simple Preposition যুক্ত হয়ে যে Preposition গঠিত হয়, তাকে Compound Preposition বলে। যেমন: Across, along, behind, below etc.
4. Phrase Preposition: দুই বা ততোধিক Word এর সমন্বয়ে গঠিত কোন Phrase যদি একটি মাত্র Preposition এরমত কাজ করে, তখন তাকে Phrase Preposition বলে। যেমন: In spite of, in lieu of, in order to, with a view to etc.
5. Participle Preposition: Present Participle বা Past Participle যখন Preposition এর মত ব্যবহৃত হয়, তখন তাকে Participle Preposition বলে । যেমন: According, during, owning, regarding, considering etc.
6. Disguised Preposition : কতগুলো Preposiiton নিজের রূপে ব্যবহৃত না হয়ে সংক্ষিপ্ত রূপে ব্যবহৃত হয়, তাদেরকে Disguised Preposiiton বলে। যেমন : at, on, of এর পরিবর্তে a/o ব্যবহৃত হয়।যেমন: It is nine O’clock. (O=of)
She comes thrice a week. (a=on) Verb কে Modify করলে Adverb হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয়।

আরো কয়েক প্রকার Preposition রয়েছে
1.Preposition of time:
যে preposition কোনো কাজের সময় বা একটি sentence এর noun গুলোর মধ্যে সময়ের সম্পর্ক নির্দেশ করে তাকে preposition of time বলে ।
Examples:
They will surely come at 6:30 pm.
This building will be inaugurated in January.
- Preposition of place:
যে preposition গুলো কোনোকিছুর অবস্থান নির্দেশ করে তাকে preposition of place বলে।
Examples:
My teacher was standing behind the tree.
Arafat lives in Dhanmondi in Dhaka.

3. Preposition of direction:
যে preposition কোনো কিছুর বা কারো দিকে নির্দেশ করে তাকে preposition of direction বলে ।
যেমন:
The school is situated on the right side of the town.
The jeep is now going over the bridge.
The bird is sitting on the roof.
4.Preposition for an agent:
যে preposition কোনো কাজ ও কাজ সম্পাদনকারীর মধ্যে সম্পর্ক নির্দেশ করে তাকে preposition for agent বলে ।
Examples:
I like to go there with you.
She likes to read the books written by Tagore.
5. Preposition used for Tools, Mechanism or Gadget:
এই preposition গুলো বিভিন্ন noun কে ( যন্ত্র, বাদ্যযন্ত্র , মেশিন প্রভৃতি ) sentence এর অন্যান্য শব্দের সাথে যুক্ত করে ।
Examples:
I opened the bottle with the help of an opener.
He likes to go long drives by his car.
She came here on foot.
Preposition এর ব্যবহার
1. Noun এর পূর্বে Preposition বসে। যেমন: The book is on the table.
- Pronoun এর পূর্বে Preposition বসে। যেমন: Rose is favourite of mine.
- Object Pronoun এর পূর্বে Preposition বসে। যেমন: They have done some important work for me.
- Present Participle এর পূর্বে Preposition বসে। যেমন: She insisted me of buying the book.
